Identification

At the beginning of each year teachers identify student?s interests and abilities within their classes. The students that are exceptional are referred to the CEO psychologist for further testing or the parents referred to GERRIC and other agencies for guidance.  From time to time there will be students who are very exceptional and these students will require Individual Education Programs with the full team support.

At St Mary?s we aim to extend and enrich students within the mainstream classroom by offering programs that allow for Higher Thinking Skills to be developed. Teaching models that are used include De Bonos Six thinking Hats, Williams Model, Maker Model, Renzulli?s Model and Ralph Pirozzo graphic organisers. We follow our school Gifted and Talented Policy.

Activities that gifted students have an opportunity to participate in are:

  • Chess competitions both local and NSW Junior chess
  • Inter school Debating
  • Mathematics Challenge and Olyimpiad
  • Tournament of Minds
  • Challenge Day
  • Eisteddfod
  • International Testing UNSW
  • Music: School Band
  • Sport: Elite levels are catered for.
  • Activities as they arise e.g. Poetry Workshops, Writing and Art workshops.
