At St Mary?s school we run a Numeracy Support Program for students in Stage 1 and Stage 2. The aim of this program is to offer support to those students who need assistance to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of basic numeracy concepts and skills. The program is developed using the Count Me In Too / Developing Efficient Numeracy Strategies (New South Wales Dept. of Education and Training.) Links have been identified between the NSW Mathematics K-6 Syllabus and the activities in the Count Me In Too Learning Frameworks. Each activity identifies the syllabus outcomes that are explored, strategies the child is using and ideas on what skills need to be developed further. The program includes individual pre-program assessment tasks to help teachers identify the needs of each student and focus on the skills which need further development.? (New South Wales Dept. of Education and Training).

The students participate in an intensive and practical program for approximately twenty minutes per day over a period of eight to ten weeks. At the conclusion of the program the children take place in a post-program assessment. This information is used by the class teacher to inform the teaching/learning tasks for each student in their daily class based mathematics lessons.

This program is co-ordinated by St Mary?s Support Teacher and runs with the support of Numeracy Aides and Parents from our school.
